Sourcing

Editorial and sources policy

What we cite, how we cite it, and what we do when we are not sure.

The rules we follow

  1. Cite the source for any figure. If a number appears on this site, we say where it came from.
  2. Mark estimates as estimates. Cost ranges are orientation for budgeting, not quotes, and they are labeled that way.
  3. Flag anything that changes. Local ordinances, setback requirements, fees and flood maps all change. Where we cite one, we say to verify it with the jurisdiction.
  4. No invented statistics. If we do not have a sourced number, we do not publish one.
  5. Say where surveying stops. A lot of boundary questions are legal questions. We try to be clear about which is which and to send people to an attorney where that is the right answer.

Primary sources we use

  • Missouri Department of Agriculture, Land Survey Program, including the Land Survey Index and Corner Master Index
  • Revised Statutes of Missouri Chapter 327 on licensing of land surveyors and corporate certificates of authority, and Chapter 60 on land surveys
  • Missouri Division of Professional Registration, Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors and Professional Landscape Architects
  • Greene County Design Standards on development where karst features are present
  • Missouri Department of Natural Resources material on sinkholes and karst
  • FEMA flood mapping and elevation certificate requirements
  • ALTA/NSPS Minimum Standard Detail Requirements, 2021

What this site is not

Not legal advice, not engineering advice, and not a survey. Nothing here establishes where your boundary runs. Only a licensed surveyor working on your specific parcel can do that.
